The Fade of Alzheimer's

Alzheimer’s disease is a disease that my family lives in fear of every day. It’s incredible to think that someone strong, intelligent and vibrant could be reduced to a shell. For my family it started in the 1980’s with my grandmother we slowly watched her wither forgetting who we were and finally who she was. Back then there were no drugs for it you could only sit back and watch it happen slowly and make no mistake for us it was slow. Next it took both of my aunts. They were luckier there was new medicine that kept them remembering a little longer and in their own homes a little longer, but the outcome was the same. Now my cousin has the retched disease and of course there are newer drugs and she will remember longer, but for her the onset came in her fifties.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association ALZ is not a normal part of aging. It is a build of between the nerve cells.  So, what are some of the risk factors? Heredity is one risk factor, along with genetics; Age the older you get the more likely you are to have ALZ. head trauma, and heart health. That’s a pretty significant list. From this list you can understand why we worry about ALZ in my family especially the women because it seems to attach itself to women for three generations hereditarily speaking.

An early warning sign is the inability to learn new information. I remember wanting my aunt to meet my new boyfriend but she wouldn’t settle down and do just that probably because she was afraid she couldn’t remember him. I was so hurt she was my favorite aunt and she couldn’t and wouldn’t settle down and visit with him.

They say that ALZ is harder on the families than it is on the patient and I’m not so sure that’s true. But today there is more hope than ever before and there are better drugs. And from someone who has seen first hand three generations of the disease we have come a long way from thinking this is caused by aluminum pots.
